BMW of North America says it will recall certain vehicles from the 2007 to 2010 model years to check and possibly replace their fuel pumps.

The luxury car maker says models equipped with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines, all of which use a high-pressure fuel injection system that BMW calls High Precision Injection, may suffer failures of a high-pressure fuel pump. Symptoms of the problem include engines cranking a long time before starting, engine warning lights illuminating and degraded engine performance. Engines may go into ”safe mode,” which is accompanied by a tone and the “engine malfunction” warning light.

The company says it expects repairs to include replacement of the fuel pump, a software update, or both. The recall affects about 130,000 vehicles and BMW expects about 40,000 to need new pumps. Affected models include: 2007-2010 335i; 2008–2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i; and 2009–2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i.

In a separate move the company says it will recall about 20,800 X5 SUVs from the 2008 model year with non-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines to replace low-pressure fuel pumps that could fail. If the pump fails, the engine will stop and the driver will driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes, though steering and brakes will still work.

BMW says no injuries have been reported in connection with vehicles included in the recalls. The company says it will notify owners in the coming weeks, but customers experiencing problems should contact their BMW dealer.
