Ford Motor Co. is voluntarily recalling 1,658 Explorer SUVs following considerations the seats do not conform to federal motorcar security standards.

The recall includes Explorers, which are produced on the company's Chicago Assembly Plant on the south side, which were manufactured between July 15 and Dec. 13.

Ford stated in a letter Jan. 28 to the Nationwide Highway Traffic Safety Administration it found certain second-row seats with manual recliner mechanisms might have parts not assembly correct dimensional specifications. Through checks, the issue was linked to a sub-supplier to Lear Corp. not sustaining satisfactory dimensional controls when stamping certain seat part parts.

Lear's Hammond facility supplies seat assemblies to the Chicago Assembly Plant.

The concern with the seats was that within the event of a crash, the seat again may not present the required strength, which increases the chance of damage, the NHTSA stated in a letter Feb. 4 to Ford.

Ford plans to mail notification letters to vehicle house owners subsequent week, and sellers already have been notified about the recall. As of Jan. 21, Ford mentioned it wasn't aware of any reports about this condition on automobiles in customer service.
